On 27 and 28 May 2019, Christie’s held three live auctions of Chinese Paintings - Chinese Contemporary Ink, Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy, and Fine Chinese Modern Paintings including Exquisite Eye: Chinese Paintings Online sale which took place from 20-27 May. The sales combined realised a total of HK$451,688,750 / US$57,807,036

 

 

The highlight from this series of sales was Poems in Large Running Script by Wen Zhengming (above). The work was hammered down for over 16 times low estimate including premium, after 35 minutes of intense bidding, realising HK$83,227,500 / US$10,651,439.

 

A further highlight was the work Calligraphy in Running-Cursive Script by Yao Shou, which achieved multiples of the low estimate, realising HK$36,692,500/US$4,695,899 - setting a world record price for the artist at auction.

 

The Chokiado Museum collection of eight works was 100% sold, achieving over 5 times its aggregate low estimate. 

 

 

The Chinese Contemporary Ink sale which took place on 27 May and totalled HK$21,131,250 / US$2,704,373, with 91% sold by lot and 86% sold by value.

 

The top lot for the sale was Small Ying Stone by Liu Dan, which realised HK$5,285,000 / US$676,373.

 

The results of the Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy Including Property from the Chokaido Museum Collection sale which took place on 28 May 2019 and totalled HK$259,662,500 / US33,231,555, with 69% sold by lot and 95% sold by value.

 

The top lot for the sale was Poems in Large Running Script by Wen Zhengming, which realised HK$83,227,500 / US$10,651,439.

 

The results of the Fine Chinese Modern Paintings sale which took place on 28 May 2018 and totalled HK$166,137,500 US$21,262,244, with 74% sold by lot and 64% sold by value.

 

The top lot for the sale was Army Crossing the Yangtze River by Li Keran, which realised HK$19,925,000 / US$ 2,549,998.

 

 

The results of the Exquisite Eye: Chinese Paintings online sale which took place from 20-27 May and totalled HK$4,757,500 / US$608,864, which was 83% sold by lot.
